SANP is proud to present Black Bears in the Smokies workshop. This is a new workshop offered by Roger Trentham, a nature and wildlife photographer in the Gatlinburg area. In addition to this workshop, Roger conducts numerous workshops throughout the year with national photographers. Roger has agreed to do a few workshops for members of SANP. Roger will help and offer instruction to those who attend his workshop. This workshop is limited to a maximum of six individuals.

Bring your cellphone if you wish to experiment with the camera functions, but do not expect instructions for the cellphone.

Rules You Must Know: This workshop has a minimum of four and a maximum of six participants. There is no refund. Guests are not allowed to accompany you to this workshop. If this event is postponed due to the weather, another date will be provided.

Date and Time: June 3rd, 2025 at 3:00 pm. Directions and more information will be emailed to those registering for this event.

Snacks and Drinks: Bring your choice.

Location: This will be provided to those registering by email.

Registration is available for members only until May 25th, or all positions are taken.  Everyone who attends must register online, with no exceptions. Do not wait to register for this event, as positions are limited and will not be exceeded.

Focus Session: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly...

Fine Art, Craft Show and Website Sales

    Leader:  Clay Thurston

    Email:  claythurston2@gmail.com

Location:  Cedar Bluff Knox County Library

Time:  Plan to arrive by 3:45 PM (program starts 4 pm)

Thinking about selling your photography at fine art or craft shows? Or perhaps you are considering website sales?  Join us for a fun, informative, and brutally honest session where we dive into The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of doing shows — and yes, there’s plenty of all three!

    What to Expect:

A visual presentation featuring real-life slides I’ve taken over the years — showing exactly what to look out for (and avoid). These insights could save you a ton of time, money, and frustration.

A deep dive into the essential equipment needed to set up a professional-looking booth — because first impressions really do matter.

Tips on the “little things” that can make a big difference in your success at shows — from pricing strategies to display tricks to customer interaction.

    Bring your questions!

I’ll answer many of them during the slide program, but we’ll also have time for anything I haven’t covered. This will be a relaxed, casual session, so don’t be shy — ask away!

Come prepared to take notes — this session will be packed with practical advice and real-world experience you won’t want to miss.

Roger has agreed to do this workshop for SANP members.  Roger will be offering instruction on how to photograph the Synchronous fireflies.

Please read all the details about this workshop.

Why Should You Attend Roger’s Workshop: You will have the opportunity to photograph the Synchronous fireflies, which are fireflies that gather and flash their lights at the same time as part of a mating ritual. SANP Field Event

    Sunday, June 15, 2025

    Leader: Ron Shrieves    Ph: 865-922-3518

    E-mail: ronshrieves@gmail.com (email preferred)

Meetup location: Contact Ron Shrieves in advance for meeting time and place information.

Event location:  Seven Islands State Birding Park

    Registration available:  Beginning today.

Description:  This go-with-the-current float covers an easy 5 miles, starting from the Seven Islands State Birding Park recently renovated public access point on the French Broad River, to another recently renovated boat ramp at Cruze Landing. Though far from pristine, this river does have some interesting sights and a bit of wildlife (and some not-so-wild life).

We'll take our time exploring the shoreline for birds and other wildlife, and stop to eat lunch and stretch our legs on an island that is in the State Park.

Note:  Ron Shrieves is leading this outing in conjunction with the Sierra Club. A completed Sierra Club Medical Form is required for all participants. You need only to provide information that you deem appropriate for this event, along with your signature. The form will be given back to you afterwards.

What to bring:  Bring binoculars if you have them, and a personal flotation device (PFD).  Also bring water and a lunch/snack, anything to keep you comfortable.

Sorry but we cannot provide boats, so you will have to contact a local outfitter and make your own arrangements for boats and paddles.

Activity Level: There may be some shoal water, but no whitewater. Basic canoe/kayak skills are required.

At long last, we are going to Bald River Falls.  The road opens on May 30, so we decided to set the date for 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.  We will meet THERE at 8:30 a.m. at a place near or at the falls - and to be determined.  We need some scouting on parking so if anyone goes before hand, please share your experiences.

Bring your tripod, neutral density and polarizing filters if you have them.

Salon - How to Print Photos and How to Mat

    Leader: Dale Potter    Phone:  (865)-773-8114      E-mail: dalepotter55@gmail.com

Meeting place: Cafeteria Annex,  J. L. Goins Administration Building on the Hardin Valley campus of Pellissippi State Community College, 10915 Hardin Valley Road, Knoxville TN

    Registration available:  Beginning today

What do you do with your photographs? Are they only for digital display? Then why do you have that expensive camera and lens? Printing is most photographers' ultimate goal, but ensuring the print looks right is essential. This is an updated version of previous print presentations for the Salon, which will cover in more detail how to get the image you want without making too many mistakes with your prints.

Printing an image requires a few things to get the same picture that shows on your monitor when it is printed out. For some of you, it requires stepping out of your comfort zone and learning a new option. It is not hard to understand if you want to get better results for photobooks, prints you sell, prints you want to give away, and most of all, prints you wish to enter in the Salon.

We will cover the calibration of your monitor and why it is crucial. You will learn about soft proofing and why it is essential to use it. We will discuss Perceptual and Relative Colorimetric, and which one to use when. We will also discuss color profiles, out-of-gamut colors, and your options. We will discuss choosing the correct color profile for your print, whether you print it yourself or send it to a printer.

How to crop and where?  Types and sizes of crops. This is an important consideration when selecting your image.  These issues will be covered using Lightroom Classic and Photoshop.   Printing on your printer or sending out to a print lab, either locally or online, and how to make sure you are getting the best image for your print.

This information is essential for a Salon print or other personal use.

There are various ways to mat your prints. We will discuss the best ones for the Salon or hanging your print. You will be able to view and see different types of mats for the Salon and other occasions.  To complete your matting process, we will cover some options you may consider for the Salon.

I will show you how to save some money for the Salon by using an ordinary trash bag.

This is a classroom-style presentation. You will be provided with lots of information to use for prints you enter in the Salon or decide to print for other uses.

You do not need to bring any prints or mats, but you will need something to take notes. Some of the information will be presented on the screen. You will have time to ask questions to prepare to select your prints for the Salon, and how you want to mat them.

You may be given a few tips on the types of images to enter in the Salon that will appeal to the judges.

If you are curious about printing but have hesitated on taking that step, this is your opportunity to learn how to take that step with success. I may not have all the answers to your questions, but I will try to point you in the right direction.

I will be able to show you how to hang a print in a mat that can be framed, and your print will hang forever without wrinkling.   I will not be covering all the aspects of framing, but you can find that information online.

By the end of the presentation, you should know how to prepare your images for printing and matting with enough time to prepare for Salon entries later this year. You can use the information to frame your prints for yourself, family, and friends.

    Dale Potter
