April Meeting - Tony Sweet Atmospherics in Photography

Who is Tony Sweet? While some of you may know Tony Sweet, for others new to photography he is a legend that you may only seen or heard about briefly. This is a rare chance for you to hear from one of the legends in fine art photography that Kendall Chiles has scheduled for SANP. Check out his website, his photographs and make plans to attend this club meeting. This is one of those club meetings you do not want to miss, as Tony an outstanding presenter who will provide valuable information during the meeting on how to accomplish better landscapes and photographs. Tony's presentation will be about atmospherics in photography. Atmospherics in photography refers to the elements and conditions in the environment that contribute to the mood, tone, and overall feeling of an image. These elements can transform an ordinary scene into something extraordinary, evoking emotions and enhancing the narrative of the photograph. In other words, looking for environmental elements to add emotional/ visual depth of the image. Here are examples of Atmospherics in photography include: Fog/Mist, Snow, Sunrise/sunset, Clouds, Reflections, Infrared, Long exposures, Silhouettes, Macro, Over exposures (Hi Key).

Tony Sweet is an internationally acclaimed fine art nature photographer and photography coach. He is known for his stunning and surreal nature and landscape photography and for his expertise and artistry in infrared, long-exposure, panoramic, abstract, and flower photography.

Tony is praised for his incredible range as a fine art nature photographer, shooting stark black-and-white and infrared landscapes as well as otherworldly, color-soaked, long-exposure and infrared nature scenes in his Surreal Landscape style. Tony’s long-exposure and infrared nature photographs seem to stretch time, crafting gorgeous scenes that contrast light and dark, fluid motion and static subjects. His newest project, The Color of Water, explores how this colorless fluid takes on the infinite colorations of nature.

Tony Sweet is a Nikon Legend Behind the Lens with fine art photographs published internationally in dozens of outlets and in use by brands. He is represented by Getty Images. Tony is author of five books on fine art nature photography techniques and creative visualization and has served as instructor on four Master Photo Workshop instructional DVDs and an iPhone photography class series. He has contributed to Shutterbug, Rangefinder, Nikon World, New York Times, and other photography industry media. Tony’s images have been used in advertising campaigns for brands like Nikon, Topaz, Lensbaby, and Singh Ray.

Tony is a lifelong visual artist and musician. He says photography and jazz are the same; the equipment must become second nature so you can spontaneously react to the changing conditions around you, being in the moment. He says most photographers need a foundation; studying the work of others is how most get started before a personal path begins to emerge. Every shot is a self-portrait and the more shots we take, the more personal the work becomes. Focus Session - Rapid Fire Image Critiques #2 (05/07/2026)

Time: 5:00 PM - Plan to arrive at 4:45 for program start at 5:00 PM

Purpose:
This session is intended to be a rapid-fire critique session, by members for members. Each participant will submit two images to be critiqued by three randomly selected members. Critiques will focus on offering constructive suggestions for possible improvements to image capture or post-processing.

While we will strive for a positive and respectful environment, participants should come with an open mind to the ideas and critiques offered by others.

Participants will not only learn more about their own images, but will also benefit from seeing and hearing recommendations on the work of others.

It is suggested that submitted images not be your “perfect” images, but rather images you like that did not fully meet your expectations for any number of reasons.

Instructions for submitting images will be provided to registered participants at a later date.

Notes:

Submitted images should be named using the following format:
Number (1 or 2), underscore, first initial, last name
Example: 1_JSmith and 2_JSmith
An “experienced” judge will provide a brief summary of each image after member comments.
Each of the three selected participants should strive to summarize their thoughts in approximately 30 to 45 seconds. The facilitator will then have about one minute, giving each image roughly three minutes of total consideration.
With 30 images, total critique time will be approximately 90 minutes. Including additional instructional and procedural discussion at the beginning, the session will last about two hours.
Each participant will be assigned a number from 1 to 15. Three numbers will be randomly drawn to provide the critique of each image projected. After each round of selection, all numbers will be returned to the pool for random selection again.

Club Picnic - Louisville Point Pavilion (05/09/2026)

SANP's third annual picnic will be held at the Louisville Point Pavilion beginning at 4:30 pm. and ending by 6:30 pm.

The annual picnic will be at Louisville Point Pavilion on Fort Loudon Lake like last year. We will be having Buddy's BBQ, including pulled pork, hot dogs, beans and cole slaw, plus iced tea. We may even celebrate our President's birthday too. The cost is $10 for SANP members, and $15 for guests. SANP is subsidizing some of the costs of the picnic for members as a benefit of membership.

Also, we will have a special guest at our picnic - Owl Ridge Raptor Center will be coming with some ambassador birds, perhaps a Screech Owl, Barred Owl, and Great Horned Owl. You will have the opportunity to see these birds up close and learn how we can help protect birds of prey.

At the Oaks Daylily Farm, Ken and Joshua Oakes cultivate thousands of daylilies across their fifty acres of farm fields. Mid-June is prime time for these hardy plants to show off their spectacular color display. Over 800 varieties will be blooming In the Oakes Farm display gardens, waiting for you to photograph their gorgeous blossoms.

Recommended equipment:

Macro lenses and other equipment for close-ups.
Telephoto lenses to isolate artistic compositions.
Other focal length lenses for context shots.
Diffuser or umbrella to conquer harsh shadows.
Knee padding for comfort while shooting at low angles.
A tripod will improve your ratio of keepers.
