What Do Magazine Editors Look for in a Wildlife Photograph?

Bob Howdeshell is a passionate wildlife photographer, having discovered the joy of bird photography shortly after acquiring his first camera in 2005. Since then, his passion has expanded to include photographing all kinds of wildlife and spiders. Bob retired from “work life” as a mechanical engineer and mechanical contractor four years ago. Retirement has allowed him to spend time at one of the best wildlife photography locations in the world – Cades Cove and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Bob and his wife enjoy traveling. Favorite destinations include Alaska, Costa Rica, and U.S. National Parks. They have been to 46 of the 63 National Parks and have a goal to visit them all.

Bob has started a new career.  He has become the caretaker of a large family of Salticidae otherwise known as jumping spiders. Bob has developed housing complexes, feeding routines, and hours of affection time for them. In return they have posed, modeled for him, resulting in award winning photographs.

Bob enjoys entering photography competitions. His goal is to measure himself against some of the best wildlife photographers. His images have been seen in the Tennessee Wildlife Resources annual calendar, the Alligator Farm annual calendar, the Tennessee Valley Fair, and the Tennessee State Fair. His photos have been published in TWRA Magazine, Alaska Magazine, Audubon Magazine, Birds and Blooms, and the Florida Wildlife Commission Magazine. His publication experience has allowed him to “pick the brains” of several magazine photo editors for tips and tricks that make an image more appealing to them. He will be sharing those ideas with us at our October meeting.

Please register on the website if you will be attending the meeting, so we can plan according for the seating arraangement.
