Knoxville to Kīlauea: A Photographer’s Artist Residency Journey

SANP member Houston Vandergriff will present a behind-the-scenes look at his month-long Artist Residency at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. He was recently selected to be the Artist-in-Residence at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park for the month of February.
Houston focused on photographing volcanic landscapes and sharing the process behind both the work and the opportunity. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, located on the Island of Hawaiʻi, is a premier National Park protecting the active volcanoes Kīlauea and Mauna Loa.

Houston will share practical insights on how to find, apply for, and make the most of photography residencies and other opportunities.

Houston is a travel photographer out of Knoxville, Tennessee. He has visited all fifty states and thirty-two countries. He has visited all ninety-five counties in Tennessee, something most Tennesseans have not done.

Houston has photographed a body of work that ranges from the mountains of Appalachia to remote international landscapes. His images have been exhibited in galleries and curated shows in cities including New York, Rome, Venice, Lisbon, Paris, Miami, Estonia, and London. His style blends careful observation with a willingness to see beyond the expected.
Art, adventure and advocacy are the theme of Houston’s photography with his travels.
